FORGIVE THE ELDER

ORUBEBE CREATES A SCENE, BEGS NIGERIANS

After creating a scene at the National Coalition centre yesterday, Former Niger Delta Affairs Minister Elder Godsday Orubebe has apologised for his behaviour Speaking with reporters last night, the PDP party agent, who held up proceedings and used abusive words on Jega, said he regretted his action and asked Nigerian to forgive his behaviour.

The former minister, who was also an agent of the PDP at the centre, took the floor after he refused to return the microphone, called Prof. Jega all sorts of names, then he literarily took to the floor: sitting on the stage, with support from others in a way that disrupted the process for a while.
But he has apoligised:

''Election is a passionate thing and I really regret what took place this morning. I was unnecessarily pushed by Jega to get to that level. I want to apologise particularly to young Nigerians that look up to take politics as a career to say that what happened was not intended to cause them any embarrassment. To Nigerians generally, I regret my actions as even an elder in the church, and a leader, the young men expected to see a lot from me and I believe that if there was any disappointment they got from me I apologize to Nigerians and to the youths of this country.”

There was the need for some comic relief at the Abuja venue of the collation of results from Saturday’s presidential election and Prof. John Etu-Efeotor, the returning officer for Rivers state, provided a large dose as he found it difficult to read out the results from the exercise in Rivers.

He had complained about the quality of light at the podium.

Chairman of INEC, Prof. Attahiru Jega had to direct that a studio light be moved closer to the podium, for Etu-Efeotor who is the vice chancellor of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Warri, Delta State.
Someone else had to be directed to reel out the results when it became obvious that the RO was having difficulty with the task.
